Schuhplattler
In the original draft of this cartoon, Loki suggested that Baldur become “God of Clogging”, and included the punchline, “the humans can sacrifice cattle to you at Riverdance,” but for some reason making the cartoon about schuhplatter seemed funnier in the end. I know next to nothing about this ridiculous form of dance, but I find it oddly fascinating to watch and I secretly long to do it professionally someday.
Even though schuplattler seems to require having both hands free for the various slaps, I thought it was important to have my platters waving cans of Old Skull beer in their hands.
Oh, I think Baldur SHOULD be the god of Schuhplattler! They’d be his friends! 🙂 This fine dance tradition survives in the New World, as a matter of fact; it doesn’t feel like a real Pennsylvania-German fest without some shoe-slapping, Lederhosen-clad, accordion-accompanied fun!
schuhplattler is much funnier than clogging.
hey, you’re still going to do this strip once you take that logging job in Trondheim, right? I mean, I know it might be hard to find inspiration for a Norse gods comic when you’re HOLY SHIT JUST A STONE’S THROW FROM THE GATES OF ASGARD ITSELF but keep it up, hear?
i agree — baldur would rock the Schuhplattler world!!!!
Kind of strange how things work out, eh? Visiting Scandinavia was not even a thought in my mind when I started doing this comic, much less living there, but soon Odin and Friends will be coming live from the land of ice and snow.
