For some reason they always leave this part out of the Viking movies… livestock in the house. Mead halls, presumably, could be quite cozy during the long winter months.

It gives a whole new meaning to Spring cleaning. I knew of 2 people who lived that way were in the US up until the late 1960s, a pair of spinster sisters. No wonder at all why they were spinsters, they did live in a barn and smelled the part. It’s supposedly an unhealthy lifestyle, yet both sisters lived well into their 90s, and saved a fortune on heating fuel.
